Well, let's see...

First of all, the airfare for just ONE person (round trip) is well over $2,000.

Secondly, if one were to leave San Francisco International Airport on, say, June 1st at 1:50 PM, one would arrive in Addis Abbaba on June 2nd at 7:05 PM.

But to make it back - and by the way, not in a TWENTY-FOUR hour period, but in TWO days - one would arrive BACK at San Francisco Int'l Airport on MONDAY, at around noon...

http://www.fareboom.com/SearchResults/68ff10774d734352a903a3091f504960/Flights

San Francisco to Addis Ababa 19h 15m - 1 stop - Next Day Arrival

Flight Date Departure Arrival Info UA900

Sat, Jun 1
1:50 PM San Francisco (SFO)

9:45 AM Frankfurt (FRA) next day
10h 55m | 5699 Miles

Layover: 1h 30m

Sun, Jun 2
11:15 AM Frankfurt (FRA)

7:05 PM Addis Ababa

That's the trip out...

Now for the return trip.

Addis Ababa to San Francisco 22h 30m - 1 stop - Next Day Arrival

Flight Date Departure Arrival Info LH591

Sun, Jun 2
11:50 PM Addis Ababa (ADD)

6:05 AM Frankfurt (FRA) next day 7h 15m | 3319 Miles

Layover: 3h 50m

Mon, Jun 3
9:55 AM Frankfurt (FRA)

12:20 PM San Francisco

So, it would take TWO DAYS to fly out and back, and if one were to perform such a rushed trip, one would only spend a mere 5 hours on the ground in Addis Ababa...

Barely enough time to walk around near the airport, let alone go thru customs, get a taxi or driver, drive out to some ruins, meander around the ruins, and get back to the airport in enough time to go back thru customs and board the plane...

Somebody's telling a whopper.... Image

That would be true (maybe); however, if you go this route, then:

Depart: SFO on Virgin America
Thursday, May 23, 2013, at 11:25 pm

Arrive: Washington, DC
Friday, May 24, 2013, 7:30 am

Depart: Washington, DC, on Ethiopian Airlines
Friday, May 24, 2013, 11:00 am

Arrive: Addis Ababa
Saturday, May 25, 2013, 7:30 am – Spend one day in Addis Ababa.

Depart: Addis Ababa
Sunday, May 26, 2013, 7:15 am

Arrive: Axum
Sunday, May 26, 2013, 8:45 am

Staying in Axum most of Sunday, all day Monday, and Tuesday morning; then on return:

Depart: Axum on Ethiopian Airlines
Tuesday, May 28, 2013, 11:05 am

Arrive: Addis Ababa
Tuesday, May 28, 2013, 2:13 pm – Spend afternoon and early evening in Addis Ababa.

Depart: Addis Ababa
Tuesday, May 28, 2013, 10:15 pm

Arrive: Rome, Italy at 6:15 pm on Wednesday, May 29, 2013
Depart: Rome, Italy at 7:25 pm on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 – ONE HOUR in Rome.

Arrive: Washington, DC
Wednesday, May 29, 2013, 8:30 am

Depart: Washington, DC, Virgin America
Wednesday, May 29, 2013, 10:00 am

Arrive: SFO
Wednesday, May 29, 2013, 12:45 pm

And there you go. . . .

P.S. Due to Customs, missed their very last leg of trip. If they catch the VERY next flight they will arrive 9:15 pm Wednesday, May 29, 2013.

Wasn't gonna post today (SO TIRED!!!), but wanted to let ya'll know we were back and was directed to this thread (by dear Armand - peace to you, dear one! and thank you for keeping our dear ones apprised!). Peace to you ALL! What a WONDERFUL thread - thank you ALL! Through my (great) fatigue, your concern and humor is MUCH appreciated!

We are back, dear JustMom and I (PEACE to you, dear JM... THANK YOU, with ALL of my heart, TRULY, for making this journey with me! I LOVE YOU!!)... but need a bit more time before posting about the journey itself. We've spent a LOT of time on planes/in airports (if you ever travel outside the U.S.... DO NOT return through Wash. DC Dulles if you can help it! O... M... G. More on that, later... ) and I've just now showered and had a bite to eat and I am EXHAUSTED.

All went well, even better than expected, actually... and we DID do some "touring" (peace and welcome to you, dear Zid... and surely you know we have pictures... right??! I mean, would someone really travel more than 10,000 miles and NOT take SOME pix, girl?? C'mon, dear Zid - you may not agree with me but SURELY you don't think I would make up a trip to Ethiopia??!! Girlfriend, seriously??! Although hers are WAY better'n mine, both dear JM and I took pix, chile... and will post a coulple/few in a day or so...)

I won't go into the details of the trip yet, though, sorry, dear ones - just not enough energy to do, right now. Have early j-o-b related appointment tomorrow and need to prepare to for that... and (of course) sleep - just spent about 17 hours on various planes and while I did get to doze, I don't think one can call it "sleep." Until then, though, I HAVE to say that the people of Ethiopia are... incredible. SO nice and giving, VERY soft-spoken and wishing to "serve"... at least from what we could tell from our (very) brief stay with them... and my heart already wants to return just to say "hey" to some the wonderful folks we met and assisted us.

I don't mean to make this frustrating or "intriguing" for your dear folks. But... I am SO frickin' tired. The trip out was fantastic - not one hitch (well, we did have a Virgin Airlines ticket clerk try to give us a hard time over carry-ons but he was wrong... of course... LOLOLOL!). The trip back into the country... and from east to west coast... however... OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wait... !!!!!!!!!!!! (it really does require all of those exclamation points). Exhausted us more, I think, than the entire rest of the trip!

Ennywho, give me a day? I've asked dear JM to let me post first, because of the "mission" and she has kindly agreed. After that, she's your girl. I am SURE she can help you all "see" what all we experienced so much more than I ever could... so that's how it'll prolly go.

Again, THANK YOU ALL for the wonderful thread - it is greatly appreciated and I look forward to sharing some of the details of our adventure with you all. Keep in mind, though, that as I shared with some, not very "eventful," as most might consider that word. But totally WELL worth the trip!

Peace!

Your servant and a slave of Christ,

"Sheldiana" (winks at our dear Sher'f - peace, luv!)

Peace!

Wow, I just can't believe you're back already, both of you! I was up much too late last night, so, logically, much too tired this morning, and there you are, home already!

The only way you could have done it more quickly would have been by teleporting! :D

Good Morning everyone and Welcome back Shelby and JustMom, so glad you are safe and sound. What a marathon trip that was. I had no idea it was going to be a short trip, I thought you were going to be gone for weeks lol so its a nice surprise to have you back so soon. I for one would love to see your pictures and hear what you saw and did. HUGS
