Uh... wow... didn't know I'd start THIS much dialogue - LOLOLOL (and peace to you dear ones!).

Dear Sher'f... peace to you and thanks for the info. I will definitely check it out BUT... I think I've actually solved the problem: apparently, Firefox will eventually bog down your computer! BUT... it comes with a self-fix!! Here's what happened:

I have the full Norton Security Suite on my computer (it's free, as part of my internet service) and every so often it will "recommend" a "tune-up" or "fix" or something. This time it recommended a "fix" and for the first time (ever!)... during a "fix"... it gave a pop-up that said I "might" need to "reset Firefox".

Ummmm... say what, now?

I took a chance, clicked on the icon, which took me to a Firefox "Reset" page... clicked "Reset" and... VOILA!

My computer is running like Speed Racer again!!! WHOOO-HOOO!

I LOVE Norton! I love technology! I love the internet!

Peace

Shellamar... and, yes, all IS peaceful once again in the kingdom of AGuest, but that little attempt at a coup by my laptop threatened to bring the whole empire DOWN!

Well what can I say? Norton itself also slows down the system. I kicked him out a decade ago. Oh somewhere I have a portable version. The more software you install, the more slower the PC gets.

Reset Firefox? How did that help? Did you previously edit Firefox's configuration and did something nasty? Cause I have edited it a a lot. Oh, maybe malware did it. And also many addons for firefox can cause slowdowns. Also don't forget to set Firefox to delete everything (cookies, history) when it shuts. Ops, it won't delete everything even if it is instructed so. LSO cookies (from video) are persistent. Use BetterPrivacy addon and configure it to remove those when you close firefox

Just don't forget what I said before:
Use portable software on your PC.

It won't write into the registry (if it is done correctly) and when it starts going crazy you can simply erase it and unzip again.

BTW, for all reading this thread:
Before you visit he shop, use available downloadable tools to check your hardware/software. Many of them are free to download. Example: From Avira Antivirus web page you can download a bootable cd to check for viruses, memory test. Here is another free one: http://www.memtest.org/

Okay, MOST of what you posted is "greek" to ME, dear ANOMOS (peace to you, and pun absolutely intended - LOLOL!). I do think I understand this:

Reset Firefox
?

Yep!

How did that help?

Specifically? I dunno. But literally, all the "stuff" that was bogging my computer down (from startup to accessing internet to posting to typing, even scrolling)... seemed to have disappear! I am actually moving QUITE fast... and NO "glitches" thus far - not a one! Knock on... what, plastic?

I have absolutely NO idea. Maybe. But not intentionally (well, I don't think)... and certainly not consciously (apparently)!

Quote:
Oh, maybe malware did it.

THAT could be true! Although, I'm not conscious of anything specifi... uhhh, hmmm... oh... uh-oh... I actually think I know what I "did", now that I think about it... what "caused" my problems (and no, not gonna tell ya'll 'cause now that I think of it, it WAS "stoopid"! So, I'll kick my own butt for it, if ya don't mind - LOLOLOL!). Ooops. :(

Quote:

Ummmm... yeah. Sure there were summa them, too. b:/

BUT... s'all "fixed" NOW! :D

Peace... and thanks for the tips, too!

Your servant and a slave of Christ,

Shellamar

OKAY, now I'm scurred again ! My puter was moving slow so I started using Firefox and everything opens much quicker!! Now you tell me I have to be weary of that too !! plus Norton !! I have no idea how to clear the cookies and junk from Firefox like I know to do from IE9, how do you remove the cookies and crap from IE9. I've only had one or two problems with Norton, but you totally need that!

Computer not coming on... hmm. Is it a laptop? Or a desktop? If a desktop open it up and blow out any dust. Don't be afraid to give it a good blow. Lots of people use compressed air for this, but I just blow... never had a problem that way. I used to fix computers for a living and this was the problem 95% of the time. Sometimes dust gets in the contacts of the memory slots and causes things to go awry. I do this every two months with my desktop machine as a matter of course nowadays.

If that's not the problem, then, are your fans coming on? You'd hear them.

Are there any beeps when starting? If so, see if there's a pattern (e.g. one long beep, one long, two short, etc.)

Peace to you...
~LQ

While using Firefox simply press:

Shift-Ctrl-Del

[but make sure that you have not been writing a reply here when you do it or you will be automatically logged out and loose it!]

you should normally only need firefox to remember your passwords (if you are the sole user of the PC).

Do it often if you browse many different web pages or they will track your browsing habits.

Enough's enough... and it's start to stink (my computer). Will be looking at new ones this weekend. May be offline for a bit. My apologies, in advance.

Peace!

Shellamar, on her own... who may be writing her laptop's eulogy with this...

Before you ditch it, try if this is working (Prior enable from BIOS to boot from CD/DVD):
http://www.puppylinux.com/download/index.html
I suppose a friend can help you burn it.

1. It doesn't need a hard disk. So no problem if your hard disk is damaged.
2. BTW, Linux can even run with bad memory*. Shh, companies don't want you to know this little secret...
* provided the damage is not in the 'begining' bytes that are used to start your computer till the bootloader (not to start your OS). And even if the damage is in the beginning you can use another memory module to start and use the corrupted as second. ;-)

Now all those damaged modules are usually either ditched into the pit or sold for $1 or 2 for spare parts.

Isn't that great?

S'okay (mornin' and peace to you, all!):

1. Bought a "cooling" pad (with the fan that keeps my laptop battery, etc., cool)
2 And a new mouse (one of those "ball" mouses, that stay stationary while you move the ball with your thumb)...

and things seem to be working MUCH bedda! Of course, I've said THAT before, so... we'll have to see. BUT... no random shutting down/mouse icon "jumping"/screen freezing, etc., thus far. It still took FOREVER for things to "load" up, but that's prolly a system startup issue (dear Voices, you out there, luv? Peace to you... and I need your expertise again! (He helped me with this problem some years ago and things worked brilliantly again!)

So, we'll see. But that's one reason I've been off the board for a bit - cantankerous computer. I will share the other in another post.

Peace to you all!

Shellamar, on her own...

So how does puppy work for you?

Oh, when was the last time you defragmented your hard disk?
and when was it the last time you defragmented your swap file?

I JUST saw this, dear ANOMOS (peace to you!). I had done a hard drive defrag just prior (I do it, say, every quarter or so)... and it greatly helped! I've never done a swap defrag, though. Can you elaborate?

Thanks and peace to you!
