For those that choose to eschew written literature and instead look to their own religious spiritual truths what would be a safety or stopgap to prevent them from righteous self affirmation?
Along with what dear tec said, dear HP (peace to you both!), I would wager that what such literature itself stated might be one safety/stoppage. For example, let's take the Bible, which is supposedly "from God" (although it isn't, but let's assume that, for now). It says, at Jeremiah 8:8:

I mean, what more does one need? How about:
"I am... the Truth" (John 14:6)? Or...
"No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6)? Or...
"You will know the truth and the truth will set you free. ... Therefore, if the Son sets you free you will truly be free." (John 8:32, 36)?
Or...
"The word [of God] became flesh." (John 1:14) and...
"He has a name... it is the word of God." (Revelation 19:13)
Just for starters? People see... what they want to see, dear HP. And don't what they don't want to. Same thing with hearing - folks hear what and who they want (ask any parent!)... and don't whomever they don't.
I hope this helps, dear one, and again, peace to you!
