Montreal, Canada- The publication of a Canadian novella has attracted mail from angry Jehovah's Witnesses, who claim that they are no longer afraid of Smurfs, and that the book portrays them as cartoon-fearing radicals.

To understand why Daniel Allen Cox’s Tattoo This Madness In (Dusty Owl Press) has stirred up trouble, one has to imagine terror springing from a Saturday morning Hanna-Barbera cartoon.

“It must have begun as a joke,” says the author. “Or people might have really seen the Devil in Smurf’s clothing.”

It all began in 1980 when Jehovah’s Witnesses in the United States reported seeing a stuffed Smurf jump up out of a chair during a church meeting and scream “I’ve had enough of this shit!”. Suddenly there were widespread reports of Smurf wallpaper coming to life, of Smurf posters falling off the wall and smothering children, and of children nearly drowning in plastic Smurf pools, to name but a few examples. Church hierarchy ordered their immediate destruction, declaring the little blue creatures ‘pagan’ and ‘demonic’.

“Of course the Smurf records that skipped were demonic,” says Cox, “not because they were scratched.”

In Tattoo This Madness In, ex-Jehovah’s Witness teenagers tattoo each other with Smurfs as a symbol of rebellion, and of their break with the religion.

Because the Smurfs are no longer on the Jehovah’s Witness hit list, both the novella’s publisher, Ottawa-based Dusty Owl Press, and the author have received angry letters from Jehovah’s Witnesses. The letters claim that the book sensationalizes a short-lived chapter of the religious group’s history.

“A chapter some would rather not rememer,” the author adds. “At least no Smurfs were harmed in the writing of this book."
__________

A real knee-slapper.

I wasn't around in JW land at that time, of course, but I've actually heard of this from the local JW's.

They said it had all been a big mistake. :D

Haha that is funny. Why do the JWs get angry when it is the WT "truth" that demonized Smurfs not the messenger.

Why, Zoe?

Because they're JW's! Goes with the territory!
