This does tend to describe a certain element on JWN.

http://www.vice.com/read/hey-atheists-j ... -up-please

HEY ATHEISTS, JUST SHUT UP PLEASE

A week ago, Salon published a story I wrote about returning to a Creationist museum my parents took me to when I was very young. The article was not mean-spirited or contemptuous; it was mostly about an atheist looking back honestly and nonjudgmentally at his religious past and religious family. I was just trying to talk about Christianity without adopting the tone of offended arrogance that so many non-Christians use when they’re discussing fundamentalists. To be clear: I wasn’t defending Creationists; I just didn’t want to be a giant dick.

Of course, plenty of other people were willing to be giant dicks. As soon as the piece was published, the comments section erupted in overwrought, hoity-toity, exasperating rhetoric, as people made fun of Creationists for being ignorant and blamed the people I mentioned in the articles for everything evil done in the name of Christianity.

Here are a few choice quotes:

“I hear Betty and Barney are especially lifelike in their display.”

“It is certainly interesting that while George Bush claimed (incorrectly, I believe) they hate us for our freedoms, large swathes of the US population are actually just as primitive in their thinking as the simplest tribesmen in the mountains of Afghanistan and are held there by a wealthy priesthood class who exploit their gullability.[sic]”

“It's a dangerous thing to show respect to beliefs and ideas that don't deserve it. For example, Christianity. Christianity is not only responsible for the murder of millions of people over the centuries, it's responsible for children being killed by ‘faith-healing’ today.” [He then linked to his website, because why not?]

Never mind that I wasn’t exposing Christianity or even endorsing it—if you say something as mild as “Hey, here are some Christians practicing their faith; that’s not really a bad thing” you’ll get mobbed by a group of people who are quickly becoming the most annoying demographic on the internet. I speak of a subtype of militant atheists who I’ll call the “Reddit Atheists.” These are the folks who have, ironically, adopted the attitudes of hardcore evangelicals who try to convert strangers on subway platforms—it’s not enough for them that they don’t believe in God, they want to make sure you don’t believe in God either. Just by being themselves, they make the best case against humanism.

If you want to find out why I call these guys Reddit Atheists, take a brief dip into the atheism subreddit. It is a place entirely defined by bitter, faux-enlightened young people sharing “thought-provoking” images about the horrific evils of religion (in practice, pretty much just Christianity) and congratulating each other for being “enlightened.” The site was originally intended to be a place where people talk about atheistic ideas, but as is Reddit’s depressing trend, it soon devolved into a swampy mess of endless, banal clichés, memes, and general anti-intellectualism. It actually rivals Creationism in terms of having a narrow worldview. They’ve actually had a campaign where they would write “once upon a time” on the first page of every Bible they found in hotels, which is probably the lamest form of vandalism ever.

Reddit Atheism isn’t about philosophy or even adult conversation; it’s about getting riled up into a frothing-at-the-mouth ideological stupor so you can feel guiltlessly self-righteous for the rest of the day. In all of my trips to r/atheism, I’ve never seen anyone post anything written in a measured tone. If you need more proof, take a look at these fine examples of even-keeled insight. I’m going to go out on a limb here, but I don’t think Ludwig Feuerbach would be proud.

But listen, I totally get it. If I were 15 when r/atheism was around, I’d probably live in this dark corner of the internet. When you hit that phase where you’re just starting to read grown-up stuff and you become convinced everyone else is a moron, it’s really easy to hate organized religion with a passion and assume that people with faith have just failed to think things through. Then you grow up a little bit by becoming more self-aware and maybe getting away from some of the more odious religious people you knew as a kid—eventually, you get to a place where you can hear someone say, “I’ll pray for you” and simply say, “Thank you,” instead of being a total shit about it. That is, unless you end up making a career out of “debating” religious people, a la Christopher Hitchens or Richard Dawkins. (By the way, what is more arrogant than assuming someone can be reasoned into abandoning their faith?)

Defining your life by volatile antitheism—in other words, clinging to something you don’t believe in—isn’t just annoying, it’s actually pretty backward, and, in some cases, culturally malignant. For a demographic that spits a lot of game about equality and mobility, they sure love lording their “intellect” over anyone who dares to think differently. The atheism subreddit gets off on feeling superior to other people; it’s not about ideas or truth, they’d rather thrive on that faux-scholar buzz. That’s why Dawkins is their fire-and-brimstone pin-up boy. That’s why they screencap Facebook updates from their religious “friends” so they can laugh at all the plebeians from their pretty little perch. There’s no respect or pragmatism, just bottomless, never-ending hate.

At a certain point you have to ask: Has hate ever led to anything progressive? Do the Reddit Atheists actually think they’re changing the world? Judging by their arrogance I wouldn’t doubt it. There’s an effective way to spread knowledge, and this isn’t it. Obviously the r/atheism brotherhood is mostly harmless, but I think I speak for everyone else in the world when I say: Guys, shut the happyballoons up for a second, please. Whatever problem you think you’re solving by your shitty rage comics and rants, you’re not.

CLEARLIGHT SAID

I enjoyed this article, BTS. And I agree....it describes a lot of people that suddenly think they are hip because they have mustered up the gumption to spout their ego-driven faux "enlightenment" and flex their so-called muscle of free will to spout and shout.

They have become militant in their approach and so close-minded that they have failed to see where science is truly taking us, thinking instead, that science should be diametrically opposed to God or anything remotely spiritual or even religious, for that matter.

Reddit has been described as a website with a user base that is intelligent yet politically and emotionally retarded and enamored with themselves, thinking they are hip and witty. If they only knew.

It reminds me of my 17-yr. old relative that suddenly realizes she has a brain cell and decides to use it to denigrate everything even remotely connected to the creator and spiritual beliefs. Something she read by some self-proclaimed "thinker" resonated with her and influenced her to adopt the same militant anti-God/anti-Christian/anti-spiritual attitude.

She loves to hear herself postulate and bloviate and is enamored of her own egocentric freedom to feel rebellious. Does that make any sense?

In other words, she is feeling full of herself because she lacks the deep spiritual wisdom to delve deeper into the real spiritual component of faith. She doesn't understand that science and spirituality are actually getting closer and closer together rather than further apart. I hope she matures and loses her anger for all things "Christ-like" and finds Wisdom guiding her journey toward the Light.

Please, PLEASE tell me you posted that on JWN, dear Burns (peace to you, dear one!)? Or if not, you will? Or someone will? I have absolutely NOTHING against atheists, truly. I would actually rather get in bed with them than with, say, those whose faith is in the WTBTS and that ilk. BUT... I can honestly say that I honestly don't often see a difference between the "reddit"atheist (I've never head of that term, so thank you for that)... and uber-JW. Truly.

The latter (JWs) contemptuously call those who don't want to hear or can't receive what they have to say on the matter "goats"... while the former call them "sheep" but just as contemptuously. Both blindly emit hate, however, while hypocritically pointing the finger at the other. Both (atheism and religion) have been responsible for their share of heinous acts, including genocide. Doesn't matter whose body count is higher: innocent people were killed in the name of the respective belief/disbelief.

There is the call by some for all to "co-exist", but I doubt that could ever happen as those who tend to sit on the pole of each of these tend to put their own "rightness" (and righteousness) over everything and everyone else - indeed, THAT is the underlying issue for both, isn't it? "I am right and YOU are wrong" versus, "Look, here's some information; take it or leave it, my regard for you won't change one way or the other." No, because THAT would require TRUE "intellect"... and a great deal more strength!

I am glad to know, though, that just as some believers see... and are utterly chagrined by... the ridiculous conduct of others who claim to be believers... there are atheists (and agnostics) who see the same in the other camp. We are glad that some of both have found their way here and hope more of each do. NOT so that one can convert the other to their way of thinking/believing... but just we can at least have a dialogue! So the DISCUSSION can take place.

Because there really isn't TRUE freedom, is there, if you cannot CHOOSE what to believe? And you cannot choose... if you don't have sufficient information.

I've stated it many times before: neither God nor Christ want BLIND followers or those of blind faith. To the contrary, Christ stated the destiny of the "blind", both the guides and the followers. Because faith... is NOT blind - to the contrary, it is supported by evidence, just not always the physical kind.

Anyway, I am very grateful that you posted that. Again, thank you... and thank you for participating and contributing here!

Peace!

Your servant and a slave of Christ,

SA

A new one on me but I LOVE that word, dear Clearlight (peace to you!)... and your comments here (thank you!). At least your relative has the excuse of being only 17 (who of us didn't think we knew "it all" around that time... either that, or were the ugliest, stupidest of humans ever created... depending on the precursors for our individual self-esteem? LOLOL!).

I'd wager that she'll learn, eventually, what most of us come to know at some point: that we don't know jack, but we're not as ugly and undesirable as we thought we were at one time - LOL! May it occur for her sooner than later!

Again, thank you and peace to you!

A slave of Christ,

SA

EXTRACTOR SAID

In America you can't hate people of a minority race... that's outrageously wrong. You can't hate gay people... it's socially unacceptable. But people of faith? ... it's open season folks!

Take every hateful anti-Christian thing Bill Maher has ever said and replace each line with an equally insulting attack against ANY other group of people. Would Maher still have a show?

Great article! (In my opinion, remove all the "language" & you'll have a stronger argument.)

Only one group is more susceptible in this country, dear Ex (peace to you!): fat/overweight/obese people. Women, even more. What's said/done about/to some of them should be deemed criminal.

Can't we ALL just get along?

It does seem strange to hear Atheists rage against a god they don’t believe exists.

The other day I looked up in the air
And raged against a god that wasn’t there
He wasn’t there again today
How I wish that god would go away

Brilliant!

As I read through this piece I couldn't help but replace "Reddit Atheists" with "Rush Limbaugh & company", especially when the author talked about “faux intellect”, and it not being “about philosophy or even adult conversation; it’s about getting riled up into a frothing-at-the-mouth ideological stupor so you can feel guiltlessly self-righteous for the rest of the day.”

Reddit is an Internet community where users submit stories that are either upvoted or downvoted. The audience skews young and atheist. The idea behind the site that the best stories rise to the top (like cream). They have subcategories like r/atheism which is a huge "circle jerk" (another reddit term) of arrogance and hate. (Mainly directed at Christianity, other faiths often get a pass.) A typical upvoted post on r/atheism will be someone gloating about how they slammed and ridiculed a family member for daring to post a Facebook status update like, "Thank God for this beautiful day and for blessing me with a great family to share it with." or "Having a tough time right now, please pray for me."

Remember how as a Witness, when someone would wish you a "merry Christmas"? Some JW's would simply say thank you and move on, appreciating the sentiment, if not agreeing. Others would froth at the mouth and haughtily gloat about how they don't celebrate pagan holidays.

Tell an r/atheist "I'll pray for you" and expect the same visceral reaction.

I wonder if its fear that drives militant atheism, fear that if there is a God they will be punished for not believing in him, or maybe they actually still have a small amount of faith in their own minds, and that spoils their eating, drinking and being merry to the extent they must do all they can to kill it.

It does seem especially strong in ex-Christians, maybe they are really trying to convince themselves.

I didn't used to believe in God, but it never concerned me in the slightest if anybody else wanted too.

Any when do you see the believers on JWN getting angry and insulting at the Atheists?

And therein lies the rub, dear Burns (peace to you!)... and the shame. You should absolutely be able to post it there with even those who disagree allowing it, perhaps even getting it, while not necessarily liking it. There once was a time...

(SA's eyes glaze over as she dreamily gazes off into the distance with thoughts of "way back when"... then abruptly snaps out of it with a Bill and Ted-esque"Whoaaa" - LOL!)

Ah, well, what can you do?

Peace to you, dear one!

Lol... too true. (though if it seems appropriate to post it over there when I get back, I might do that if someone else has not. But I would not want to throw a wrench in the tentative atheist/theist truce, not until that truce has been overturned at least)

I liked the article. The people it applies to don't tend to see it in themselves though (or they do once it is pointed out, and that is where the... um... 'vitriol?' comes from to deny it)

Peace,
tammy
