Why do JW's use Jah? As opposed to say God? What is Jah?

Is it short for Jehovah?

I've never heard of anybody refer to God as Jah til I came across you fine folk

Jah (pronounced with a stronger J sound like giraffe) comes from the Hebrew JHVH or YHWH. Jw's say Jehovah as they used the letters YHWH and inserted vowels to become YaHWeH. They say the english for YHWH is Jehovah.

Which is actually incorrect as Psalms 68:4 says " Jah is his name" (with a Y) We say Hallelui"jah" all the time which is Praise Jah!
Psalms 146-150 praises his name throughout.

The correct hebrew, which originally had no vowels is JHVH (JaHVeH) is pronounced like it starts with a "Y".

If you listen to the likes of Reggae and heavy dub you would often find musical uses of the name such as "Jah is my salvation and my light".

It's always seemed funny to me that the WT stresses the importance of using the name "Jehovah" when referring to and praying to God... and then JWs use the short version "Jah"!

Interesting, dear Nambo (peace to you!). I am Black and I do use this name, as well as the full[er] moniker, JaHVeH (which means, "JAH, who breathes/causes armies - of spirit beings - [to come] into existence"). JAH... who breathes (into existence).

I don't think ANY of the following folks... or those who advised/worked with them as they compiled their Bible versions... were Black, though:

Psalm 68:4

The TRUTH is that it's actually more an issue of fear than of anything else, to not utter/use God's name. Some folks in ancient Israel didn't believe man is "worthy" of using the name of the MOST Holy One of Israel... that doing so is disrespectful and will garner some kind of punishment. So they REMOVED it from the Writings (another reason my Lord said, "Woe, to you, scribes!"). This is absolutely untrue, however! Indeed, how could Israel CALL on/sing praises/make meldoy TO a name... if they didn't KNOW the name in question?? The One whose name would mean "God is with man" (Immanuel) and "JAH/Saves/Salvation of JAH (JahEshua) hadn't been sent yet, so WHOSE name was to be used UNTIL that time?

What folks don't GET is that (1) such fear is unfounded because PERFECT LOVE... casts ALL fear OUTSIDE - so that if one is serving God and calling on His name out of LOVE... there is no REASON to fear using that name (because there is NO LAW against love!); and (2) the name of Christ himself is important... NOT just because it is above every other name (except God's) or that's it the name we must call upon, or that its the name for which every knee will bend (those are all VERY important attributions of Christ's name, yes), BUT... it is important to ISRAEL because, Christ himself said TO them:

"... I say unto you, you shall not see me again, till you shall say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord'." Matthew 23:39

What did he mean by that? That it isn't until Israel says "[b]Blessed is he [/b](speaking of himself, the Holy One of Israel) who comes in the name of the LORD" (the "LORD", here being the MOST Holy One of Israel, JAH of Armies).

Only ONE has done that (come in the name of JAH) and only One will: the One whose name means "JAH (and no one else) Saves/Salvation of (the MOST Holy One of Israel) JAH... the Chosen One... of JAH.

Hence, HIS name: JAH eShua... MischaJAH.

HE came... and will come again... in the name of JAH. Because his own name glorifies that name, the name of the MOST Holy One of Israel, JAH... of Armies. JAHVEH.
