AGUEST SAID
Here's what makes me smile about things like this:
[quote]The NDAA, however, wouldn’t do much other than legalize what the government already has been doing since the Bush administration, perhaps finding it’s true origins in Vice President Dick Cheney’s “1 Percent Doctrine,” which held that if there was even an 1% chance that a person could be engaging in terrorism in the future, the government had to pre-emptively convict the person of a crime right away. Most of whom have been bearing the brunt of this largely un-American and simply inane doctrine have been immigrant-Muslim families or children of immigrants who, in the midst of the height of Islamophobia, have found themselves incarcerated for long sentences simply because of the religion they practice or the political beliefs they could one day hold.[/qoute]
Our descent began with the Patriot Act, dear MS (peace to you!). I find it curious that some, while villifying Mr. Obama as being Muslim and so just working toward handing the US over to its Muslim "enemies" on the one hand, others are apparently villigying him as being anti-Muslim by Acts such as this.
It's interesting to me, especially given the thinking of some about this site: we have enemies that some believe are planning to do us harm. Because of this POTENTIAL some have expressed the wisdom in letting them post, due to the POTENTIAL danger. And that danger really isn't far-fetched. Others (including myself, to some degree) believe that we shouldn't restrict the freedoms of ANYONE, so long as no "laws" are broken. But, then, that leaves us "vulnerable" TO violations.
I can see how this issue is much the same, but the risks and dangers are higher. How DO you stop another WTC disaster from occurring? And I don't see the same... mmmmmmm... scramble... to impose legislation upon any blonde-haired, blue-eyed, ex-US Marines... although Timothy McVeigh almost single-handedly brought down a federal building... with babies inside at the time (we don't like to talk about THAT event, though. Why IS that? Why are we STILL bemoaning the WTC disaster... and focusing all attention on that... and mouring it AS A COUNTRY... yet, barely making a peep over the Murrah Building disaster? Things that make you go "hmmmmm". I digress.).
I don't want ANYONE improperly or illegally detained. No matter WHAT their race, religion, ethnicity, etc. At the same time, I don't want myself or my loved ones... or ANYONE... to get on a plane with a bomb. Or a train. Or a bus. Or be in a building. So... what to DO?
I don't think blaming the decisions of our government is the answer. Unless we want to explore the theory that Mssrs. Bush and Cheney WERE involved in the 9/11 conspiracy... I think we have to accept that we are living in different times, right now, and perhaps we don't know what all the government knows. WE certainly didn't know Osama Bin Laden was hiding out in Pakistan. Per the media, he was holed up in some caves in Afghanistan.
It is truly sad that the WORLD is a place where freedoms are often restricted for the sake of safety. Have to be. But I don't think we can cry out and whine to a government to keep us safe... and then decry how they choose to do that. Particularly if we're going to not be a "part" of that because it is not "part" of Christ's kingdom. Those who are part of Christ's kingdom really do have to let the superior authorities work out their tasks.
What, though, if those tasks begin to infringe upon us personally... or others to the point they seem to have no voice? In all things, we are to obey God as ruler. Sometimes that means speaking up for/taking action on behalf of the oppressed, yes? Because that's what love... and justice... would do. To what extent is only tempered by love: we can't, say, return missiles - LOLOLOL!
I don't know the answer(s) to the problems and concerns of this world: who can control man who acts in opposition to God? But, again, I don't think we can decry government action that purports to keep citizens safe... while crying to be KEPT safe. Rather, submitting some other, reasonable, moral, ethical... and workable... solution might be the best course. I personally don't have one... other than to keep pointing to my Lord and HIS rulership.
Most laugh at that, though, so...
Just my $0.02.
Peace!
YSSFS of Christ,
SA
