In the news - Harm done in the name of religion. The beautiful young girl died as a result of abuse and starving because that's how the adoptive parents carried out their religious beliefs on child rearing. They had 7 biological children and adopted 2 Ethiopian children.
I thought this was of interest to us here because the Children were adopted from Ethiopia.

Oh, this is going to cause problems, IMHO (mornin', dear Zoe, peace... and thanks for sharing it). I have to hold judgment on this because so many folks truly do want to help/love children from other countries/races... and since these two already had a big family, perhaps they did, too, and there's more to the story. I HOPING there is and that perhaps the authorities have jumped to judgment (happens). If not, I can't help but think their "religious beliefs" are nothing more than a flimsy accuse for racism or religious bigotry. Sorry... but that's because I don't see where the "biological" children suffered.

Maybe their "defense" will be that the child was unhappy and wouldn't eat/come in the house. Who knows. Sigh.

If they are found guilty and convicted, though, this may cause serious problems between the US and Ethiopia because the adoption program is already under fire on the Ethiopian end.

Worries, worries...

Peace!

A slave of Christ,

Shellamar, who is basing her opinions... and they are truly only opinions... on what she learned in her research, which include the US/Ethiopia adoption agreement situation... prior to visiting Ethiopia a bit ago...

I think they have been found guilty now. The article goes back and forth a bit.

ANd you were right... the defense the mother gave on the 911 call is that the daughter refused to come in, and took off all her clothes and threw herself on the ground. (one of the commenters said that is a sign of end-stage hypothermia)

They defense attorneys also said that the boy who was abused was defiant and caused problems... and I thought that was awful, to blame him for his abusive punishments because he was 'bad'?

Bad behavior is often (probably not always, but often) a sign that something is wrong somewhere... at home or at school (and these kids were home-schooled, so...)

I'm curious about the book that they were following... 'How to train up a child'... or something like that.

Peace,
tammy

Yeah, I woulda seen that had I read the article, dear tec (peace, luv!)... but I was "afraid" to. I have issues where children are harmed in foster/adoptive homes, especially when the biological children are treated better. And particularly when it's an interracial situation. Sorry, but I was born awhile ago and have seen/heard of SOME stuff, let me tell you. So I tried to avoid it here.

Yes. Maybe here it was the result of "I didn't want to BE adopted and leave my home, regardless of what you ADULTS thought/did!"?

Children don't mind poverty. They don't even recognize it. But they DO recognize not being wanted, or at least FEEL that way, when they're sent away to live with someone other than their parent(s)... and particularly people they don't know. They don't CARE if mom is a street walker or crackhead or if dad is a drunk/convict. They don't even care if mom/dad are abusive: they are MOM/DAD.

Sad story, and sad that these folks religious beliefs taught them their parenting skills (although, "something" in them should have SAID, "Wait, no, THAT's not the way to show love!"). Abusive parents come in all shapes, sizes, and religious beliefs, though.

For reasons that will go unmentioned, I hate this kind of topic and always hope it isn't really abuse but a misunderstanding of some sort. Just hard to fathom that people treat children so. I should (will) steer clear going forward.

Peace, all!

A slave of Christ,

Shellamar

I hear you Shelby, I was shocked reading it and looking at that girls beautiful innocent face I consider those people monsters for treating her that way. Why do people adopt children if they don't love children, especially when they already have 7 of their own?? Reminds me of hoarding and then you can't control that much stuff or pets or children so you discard it in a corner.

I hope they put her in prison for the rest of her life, but they say she and he could get 20 years. She was convicted of more and worse charges than the husband so I suspect she was the main source of the "discipline".

These monsters deserve the death penalty and so do the officials who signed the papers to adopt those poor souls. So you have 7 children and want to adopt more? REALLY? What are they? Chickens?
