The City of Oakland has agreed to pay Scott Olsen $4.5 million to compensate him for devastating brain injuries he suffered when an Oakland Police officer shot him in the head with a "less lethal" munition on October 25, 2011, during a demonstration in support of Occupy Oakland. The lead filled "bean bag" round, fired from a 12 gauge shotgun, shattered Mr. Olsen's skull and permanently destroyed part of his brain. The settlement in Olsen v. City of Oakland, 3:12-cv-06333, is pending final approval by the Oakland City Council. Mr. Olsen was represented by attorneys Jim Chanin, Rachel Lederman, and Julie Houk.

Well, we'll prolly see our taxes go up (peace, dear ANOMOS!)... again... 'cause we are the ones who pay for OPD's idiocy (which can be great, at times). But GOOD for Mr. Olsen. Absolutely. I mean, it's not like my little city could afford more at the expense of its asinine police department. I love my city (well, when it's not cloudy/overcast/cold)... but have no illusions as to its deficiencies... and why there are so many "pockets" of crime/poverty, etc. OPD is responsible for a LOT of the ills, here. Problem is, can't get a mayor who can see that. Rather, always get a mayor who listens to the "haves" who are SO frightened for their little bit of "stuff" that anyone "they" don't like... or who is not "like" them... or would do/not do what "they" would do/not do... is fodder for the police.

Ah, well... s'what you get, sometimes, when man's "runnin'" things. Could be worse, I suppose...
